Beth Cox Report: July 2016

Dear Loyal Readers, Authors, and Publishers,

This past month, when sorting through link requests for the MBR website, I learned about a couple helpful links especially for writers:

http://www.stopprocrastinatingapp.com/writers-block

lives up to its title of "101 Advanced Strategies to Get Rid of Writer's Block", and July's Link of the Month is Winning Writers:

https://winningwriters.com

This is a website packed with practical resources, including free literary contests, and tips for avoiding or busting scams.

Now for July's Book of the Month. It's a scathing expose of the widespread, disastrous scam of "foreclosure fraud" that swept America during the all-too-recent Great Recession:

Chain of Title

In the depths of the Great Recession, a cancer nurse, a car dealership worker, and an insurance fraud specialist helped uncover the largest consumer crime in American history, and thereby revealing a scandal that implicated dozens of major executives on Wall Street. They called it foreclosure fraud: millions of families were kicked out of their homes based on false evidence by mortgage companies that had no legal right to foreclose. Lisa Epstein, Michael Redman, and Lynn Szymoniak did not work in government or law enforcement. They had no history of anti-corporate activism. Instead they were all foreclosure victims, and while struggling with their shame and isolation they committed a revolutionary act: closely reading their mortgage documents, discovering the deceit behind them, and building a movement to expose it. In "Chain of Title: How Three Ordinary Americans Uncovered Wall Street's Great Foreclosure Fraud" David Dayen (a columnist for the Fiscal Times) deftly recounts how these ordinary Floridians challenged the most powerful institutions in America armed only with the truth -- and for a brief moment they brought the corrupt financial industry to its knees. A consistently compelling, informed and informative read from beginning to end, "Chain of Title" is a truly exceptional study that should be a part of very community and academic library collection in the country. For personal reading lists it should be noted that "Chain of Title" is also available in a Kindle edition ($15.39).

That's all for the July 2016 Beth Cox Report. By the way, some states (including the MBR's very own Wisconsin) have primary elections for various government offices this August; please don't forget to research your local candidates, and vote for the ones you deem to be the best!
