Keith Plessy and Phoebe Ferguson were both born in New Orleans in 1957. Sixty-five years earlier, in 1892, a member of each of their families met in a Louisiana courtroom when Judge John Howard Ferguson found Homer Plessy guilty of breaking the law by sitting in a train car for white passengers. The case of Plessy v. Ferguson went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled that "separate-but-equal" was constitutional, sparking decades of unjust laws and discriminatory attitudes.

In "Together: An Inspiring Response to the "Separate-But-Equal" Supreme Court Decision that Divided America", Amy Nathan threads the personal stories of Keith Plessy and Phoebe Ferguson into the larger history of the Plessy v. Ferguson case, race relations, and civil rights movements in New Orleans and throughout the U.S. She tells the inspiring tale of how Keith and Phoebe came together to change the ending of the story that links their families in history. It's "a flip on the script," said Keith.

Knowledgeably written, impressively organized, and thoroughly 'reader friendly' in presentation, "Together: An Inspiring Response to the "Separate-But-Equal" Supreme Court Decision that Divided America" is especially and unreservedly recommended for middle school, highschool, and community library American Civil & Human Rights History collections. https://www.amazon.com/That-They-Lived-African-Americans/dp/0814347541

In February 2017, Rochelle Riley was reading Twitter posts and came across a series of black-and-white photos of four-year-old Lola dressed up as different African American women who had made history. Rochelle was immediately smitten. She was so proud to see this little girl so powerfully honor the struggle and achievement of women several decades her senior. Rochelle reached out to Lola's mom, Cristi Smith-Jones, and asked to pair her writing with Smith-Jones's incredible photographs for a book. The goal? To teach children on the cusp of puberty that they could be anything they aspired to be, that every famous person was once a child who, in some cases, overcame great obstacles to achieve.

"That They Lived: African Americans Who Changed the World" features Riley's grandson, Caleb, and Lola photographed in timeless black and white, dressed as important individuals such as business owners, educators, civil rights leaders, and artists, alongside detailed biographies that begin with the figures as young children who had the same ambitions, fears, strengths, and obstacles facing them that readers today may still experience. Muhammad Ali's bike was stolen when he was twelve years old and the police officer he reported the crime to suggested he learn how to fight before he caught up with the thief. Bessie Coleman, the first African American female aviator, collected and washed her neighbors' dirty laundry so she could raise enough money for college. When Duke Ellington was seven years old, he preferred playing baseball to attending the piano lessons his mom had arranged.

"That They Lived" fills in gaps in the history that American children have been taught for generations. For African American children, it will prove that they are more than descendants of the enslaved. For all children, it will show that every child can achieve great things and work together to make the world a better place for all.

Critique: A welcome and informative celebration of African American contributions and achievements, "That They Lived: African Americans Who Changed the World" is an especially and unreservedly recommended for family, elementary school, middle school, and community library African American History collections for children ages 8-12. It should be noted for personal reading lists that "That They Lived: African Americans Who Changed the World" is also readily available in a digital book format (Kindle, $9.99).

Synopsis: Liv Varanakis doesn't have a lot of fond memories of her father, which makes sense because he fled to Greece when she was only eight. What Liv does remember, though, is their shared love for Greek myths and the lost city of Atlantis. So when Liv suddenly receives a postcard from her father explaining that National Geographic is funding a documentary about his theories on Atlantis -- and will she fly out to Greece and help? Liv jumps at the opportunity.

But when she arrives to gorgeous Santorini, things are a little... awkward. There are so many questions, so many emotions that flood to the surface after seeing her father for the first time in years. And yet Liv doesn't want their past to get in the way of a possible reconciliation. She also definitely doesn't want Theo (her father's charismatic so-called "protege") to witness her struggle.

And that means diving into all that Santorini has to offer -- including the beautiful sunsets, the turquoise water, the hidden caves, and the delicious cuisine. But not everything on the Greek island is as perfect as it seems. Because as Liv slowly begins to discover, her father may not have invited her to Greece for Atlantis, but for something much more important.

For Charlotte Holloway, the world ended twice. The first was when her childhood crush, Dean, fell in love with her older sister. The second was when the Crimson, a curse spread through eye contact, turned the majority of humanity into flesh-eating monsters.

Neither end of the world changed Charlotte. She's still in the shadows of her siblings. Her popular older sister, Harlow, now commands forces of survivors. And her talented younger sister, Vanessa, is the Chosen One -- who, legend has it, can end the curse. When their settlement is raided by those seeking the Chosen One, Charlotte makes a reckless decision to save Vanessa: she takes her place as prisoner. The word spreads across the seven seas -- the Chosen One has been found.

But when Dean's life is threatened and a resistance looms on the horizon, the lie keeping Charlotte alive begins to unravel. She'll have to break free, forge new bonds, and choose her own destiny if she has any hope of saving her sisters, her love, and maybe even the world. Because sometimes the end is just a new beginning.

A deftly crafted blend of romance, fantasy, and action/adventure, "Unchosen" by Katharyn Blair is an inherently riveting read from cover to cover. No living beasts can be found within the city's walls. And no good comes to the guilder or foundling who trespasses too far from their labors.

Even on the tower rooftops, where Errol Thebes and the rest of the city's teenagers pass a few short years under an open sky, no one truly believes anything uncommon is possible within the city walls. But one guild master has broken tradition to protect her child, and now the whole city faces an uncommon threat: a pair of black iron spikes that has the power of both sword and needle on the rib cages of men has gone missing, but the mayhem they cause rises everywhere. Synopsis: The lives of a Mexican-American family living in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley during the turbulent 1960's and 1970's are the focus of "Coconut: Brown on the Outside, White on the Inside" by first time novelist Manuel Padilla Jr.

Despite living a middle class life, "The Rodrigos" have to endure terms like "wetback" and "beaner" -- even though they don't speak Spanish. To top it off, their daughter is a Chicano rights activist who is mixing with the wrong group of militants; their sister-in-law suffers at the hands of an abusive husband; and their precocious son is gifted and headed for the Ivy League, only his parents don't have a clue what "gifted" means and are afraid of him deserting "la familia." Sure, he could be one of the 8% of Latinos to graduate from college during that time - if racism, marginalization and his parents don't extinguish his dream first.

"Coconut" takes us back to a time when everything was "groovy", when bell bottoms, brown power and disco collided with Civil Rights, earthquakes -- and the quest to be accepted as an American. For any young readers who were ever called a "coconut," "banana" or "Oreo," "Coconut: Brown on the Outside, White on the Inside" will leave them laughing, crying and better understanding what racism and life were like for people of color then -- and why we are who we are today.

An impressively original, exceptional well written, and unreservedly recommended addition to highschool and community library YA Hispanic/Latino Fiction collections, it should be noted for personal reading lists that "Coconut: Brown on the Outside, White on the Inside" is also readily available in a digital book format (Kindle, $3.99).

Children will enjoy meeting two whimsical tree spirits -- one wise and the other foolish. They played happily together until one night a tiger sat under the tree of the foolish spirit, growling and gnawing on a stinking bone. The foolish tree spirit said, "I'm getting rid of that tiger! He's polluting the forest with his noise and stench!"

Young picture book leisure readers will appreciate the treats of these new publications from Penguin Publishers.

Marilyn Nelson's Lubaya's Quiet Roar (9780525555551, $17.99) features lovely paintings by Philemona Williamson and tells of a girl who loves to be alone, listening and daydreaming rather than interacting with others. When news from the outside world enters her family's home, they choose to participate in a demonstration, where Lubaya finds that her unique talents actually lend to visual creations that support a message she is too shy to deliver in other ways. The strength of her efforts makes an important case for using one's talents to communicate in different ways.

Oliver Jeffers provides an inspiring survey in What We'll Build: Plans for Our Together Future (9780593206751, $19.99). As a father and daughter build plans for putting together and taking apart opportunities, they build a new life together using special tools to create a home and foster love. A simple dialogue ("What shall we build, you and I?") invites young readers and read-aloud parents to consider the many ways love and shared experience can be fostered, teaching tolerance along the way ("You don't always lose,/and you don't always win./So we'll build a gate to let them in.").

Jane Yolen and Heidi E. Y. Stemple's I Am the Storm (9780593222751, $17.99) features lovely art by Kristen and Kevin Howdeshell and comes from a mother and daughter who share stories of different experiences during storms. As young readers read about various storm survivors and their cooperative efforts, they receive lessons on not just physical endurance, but psychological paths towards building better relationships, connections, and helpfulness.

These are outstanding books that young readers will find appealing.

Three fine picture book presentations are highly recommended acquisitions for discriminating children's collections.

Marti Dumas's Women in the Old West (9780531130803, $31.00 Library Binding, $7.95 Kindle, 48pp) provides elementary grades with 48 pages of lively true details about women who lived in the western territories and enjoyed freedoms other states hadn't yet voted on. Women in that era farmed, ranched, taught, and did work that only men did in other parts of the country. Photos, timelines, and color illustrations throughout pack a compelling account of their lives and achievements.

Shaun Tan's Eric (9781338622089, $19.99 HC, 32pp) provides a new edition of a classic story of a foreign exchange student's odd cultural lessons for the young people around him. Black and white drawings supplement a story that requires either good reading skills or parental involvement...and adults will be pleased to see this intriguing story because it excels in surprising scenarios and revelations they won't see coming.

Jon J. Muth's Addy's Cup of Sugar (9780439634281, $17.99 HC, $10.99 Kindle, 32pp) is based on a Buddhist healing story and tells of Addy and kitten Trumpet, who are always together until Trumpet is hit by a car. Addy looks to her wise friend Stillwater to bring Trumpet back to life, but instead she's sent on a mission to obtain a cup of sugar from any household that has not been touched by loss. The panda bear's lesson to Addy will help children touched by loss and parents will want to use this as a gentle read-aloud lesson.

These are excellent books that deserve a place in any discriminating picture book collection.

Laura Freeman's colorful drawings accent this survey, which is especially recommended for picture book collections looking for appealing, different African-American biographical sketches about achievement.

Julia Richardson's Little Dandelion Seeds the World (9781534110533, $16.99 HC, $16.14 Kindle, 40pp) will reach ages 4-8 with its lyrical story of the dandelion's presence around the world. When Jake Green opens a mysterious box containing a severed finger, he accidentally summons a grim reaper intent on dragging him to the Eternal Void (yes, it's as fatal as it sounds). Now Jake is running for his life. Luckily, he has a knack for talking to ghosts, which just might help him survive long enough to reach the Embassy of the Dead and plead his case. Spooky characters, a haunting story line, some gruesome details, and a dash of creativity makes the recipe for a satisfying read. The ending suggests a second course. Bon appetit. (Ages 8-12)

Jaundice and Kale are back from their adventure on the high seas, and they are settling back into a quiet life in Dullsville, just the way they like it. The tea is tepid, the oatmeal is tasteless, and he socks are ripe for darning until Aunt Shallot shows up and reveals herself to be anything but the dull relation they were expecting. I loved this story and so will any young reader. It has lots of twists and turns, is full of action, and the ending not only answers and explains all mysteries of the story but it wonderfully leads into the next great adventure. (Ages 8-12)

This delightfully illustrated story of a young girl's awakening will answer that and more. Like Hope, all our lives broaden at some point, and injustice takes us by surprise. We too, may be able to add our voice to issues that matter, like Hope and her friends did with Fair Trade Clothing. By taking actions that help to make people aware of something that needs to change, we too become activists. This story is an enlightening, and engaging growth in awareness. (Ages 8-12)

Mosquitoes don't bite Nala Simiyu. It's part of who she is, like being a half-Kenyan seventh-grader whose mother is in a wheelchair. But when a schoolmate's father who happens to head up a large drug company learns of Nala's special power, the excitement begins. After helping out with mosquito research, Nala has the chance to travel to Kenya to investigate mosquitoes' reactions to her father's family. All goes well until a man heartbroken by his daughter's death from malaria kidnaps Nala. I can't imagine any reader, young or old, who will not feel enlightened by reading this wonderful book.
