The collaborative project of author Nushin Aloo and illustrator Shadia Kassem, "The Adventures

At Home with the Beaver: The Story of a Keystone Species is a nonfiction children's picturebook
about much more than beavers. At Home with the Beaver examines how the beaver's dam creates
a pond habitat that a multitude of other plants and animals depend on for survival, especially
those that need still water instead of rapidly flowing water. From frogs to ducks to plants, fish,
snakes, and even fierce predators, all sorts of different living things are connected through the
"keystone", dam-building beaver. Captivating, full-color photography of wildlife in its natural
habitat distinguishes this treasure for school and public library picturebook collections.
A Book About Whales
Andrea Antinori
Abrams Books for Young Readers
www.abramsyoungreaders.com
9781419735028 $16.99 amazon.com
A Book About Whales is a nonfiction children's picturebook filled with amazing true facts about
whales, the world's largest mammals. From how whales eat and sleep, to their social
organizations, and how humans have interacted with them (from hunting to whalewatching), A
Book About Whales is enlightening and extraordinary. Simple black-and-white sketches and
drawings of whales illustrate this thoroughly informative picturebook, highly recommended
especially for school and public library children's collections. "Whales get the water they need to
survive from the food they eat. Just like other mammals, they don't want to drink lots of salty
seawater. When wales eat, they need to make sure that they don't drink any. That's not easy when
you live in the sea! Luckily, they have baleen plates, which they use to solve this problem."
Coral Reef Animals Book 1: Invertebrates, A Guide in Rhyme

P.O. Box 3346, Omaha, Nebraska 68103
9781726706315, $9.99 PB, $3.49 Kindle, 30pp, www.amazon.com
"Coral Reef Animals Book 1: Invertebrates" has the distinction of being the only children's book
featuring the entire world of coral reef invertebrates, as well as being a tour de force of creativity
in both descriptive verse narration paired with stunning illustrations created by "applying artistic
effects to photographs sourced from Rotolia.com." Really the combination of poetry and fantastic
colored artworks of the coral reef animals is unforgettable. here is an example of the verse
portrait of the Jellyfish: "They're almost only H2O,/ With tiny bits of solids;/ Some of them can
even glow!/ No bones, nor brain, nor heart have they;/ Yet, sensing chemicals, light, and sway,/
Their nerve net tells of passing prey./ Some can sting by shooting 'darts'/ Of poison from their
tentacles;/ If ever you are stung, it smarts!/ They live their lives on broadest scales:/ From mere
hours, to a year;/ Small as mites, to big as whales!" The poem is accompanied by three magical
underwater portraits in shades of blue, aqua, peach, and black and white. "coral Reef Animals
Book 1: Invertebrates" is a classic, hopefully the first of a series. Children and adults will be
enchanted by it and be inspired to take action to protect the world's reefs at risk.

In the fourth installment in the Harry N. Abrams 'Making of America' series for young readers
ages 10-14, "Susan B. Anthony" by Teri Kanefield examines the life of one of America's most
famous suffragettes. Anthony was born into a world in which men ruled women: A man could
beat his wife, take her earnings, have her committed into an asylum based on his word, and take
her children away from her. While the young nation was ablaze with the radical notion that
people could govern themselves, "people" were understood to be white and male. Women were
expected to stay out of public life and debates. As Anthony saw the situation, "Women's
subsistence is in the hands of men, and most arbitrarily and unjustly does he exercise his
consequent power." She began her public career as a radical abolitionist, and after the Civil War,
she became an international figurehead of the women's suffrage movement. "Susan B. Anthony"
includes selections of Anthony's writing, endnotes, a bibliography, and an index. While also
available in a digital book format (Kindle, $11.13), "Susan B. Anthony" is especially

just in time for the school talent show. When she tells her classmates that she's learning
hip-hoppity moves from bunnies, Lizzy becomes embarrassed and self-conscious as the children
giggle at her over-active imagination. From there, Lizzy is decidedly in complete denial that
animals communicate with her. She becomes an avid "non-believer." Naturally, the bunnies
organize an intervention. Not only will these furry little creatures not allow Lizzy to attempt
'hip-hop' without them, they do not want to lose their friend. Word travels fast and before long,
where once there were two bunnies there are now three... and soon four and then dozens more.
All the while, Lizzy remains steadfast in her denial right up until the "Rabbit-a-Raucous Recital."

The Legend of the Fairy Stones
Kelly Anne White
Morgan James Kids
c/o Morgan James Publishing

9781642791969, $23.95, Library Binding, 52pp, www.amazon.com
A unique stand-alone picture book, "The Legend of the Fairy Stones" by Kelly Anne White shares the fictional legend of how real-life fairy stones were formed. Woodland lore has it that the cross-shaped stones came from the solidified tears of forest fairies the day they heard that Jesus died. "The Legend of the Fairy Stones" takes young readers ages 4-10 on an upbeat journey through a land filled with joyful fairies of all varieties before twisting and turning into a world of evils and ill wills combated by a sense of fearlessness found in the spirit of the fairy stones. It's been deemed that fairy stones repel witches, ghosts, goblins, ghouls, and all other types of ghastly fools. With its rhythmic text and classic fairy-tale style, "The Legend of the Fairy Stones" cleverly integrates fantastical folklore in a collage-style montage of amazing artwork from the public domain. These very real stone crosses, officially called Staurolite, form naturally through a geothermal process known as "cruciform penetration twinning". Alongside its elements of fantasy and whimsy, "The Legend of the Fairy Stones" remains grounded in educational content with back matter that focuses sharply on STEAM and Common Core Standards, making it an ideal and recommended addition to both community and elementary school library collections. It should be noted for parents that "The Legend of the Fairy Stones" is also available in a paperback edition (9781642791952, $11.95).

Patrick Guest's The Second Sky (9780802855206, $17.00) is illustrated by Jonathan Bentley and
tells of Gilbert, who peeks out of his egg to see the vibrant sky for the first time. Gilbert wants to
be part of this sky life, but he has big, clumsy feet and can't fly at all. How can he soar when he
can't even walk? A fun story revolves around a little penguin who takes his first step into the
world. Gilles Bachelet's A Story That Grows (9780802855121, $16.00) tells of a variety of
parents, from a gentle panda mother to a dad with whiskers and a "mom with a long beak". This
fun story grows in two ways: with the uniform theme of read-alouds that each parent performs,
and by the stuffed animal each animal child holds that sets the stage for the next animal family to
be presented. The result is an inviting set of pictures reinforcing reading and different scenarios
that evolve from it. Both are wonderful read-aloud recommendations, in particular.

do at bedtime, but play? A fun tale of forgetful animals who are too tired to obey bedtime rituals
such as tooth-brushing, and who need a sleepy panda to remind them, creates a whimsical and
fun read that takes a different approach than the usual bedtime story. Aaron Blabey's Pig the
Fibber (9781338291766, $14.99) returns Pig the Pug to the limelight, this time depicting the
greedy, lying pug as nothing but trouble. Or, is he? A fun story evolves which will delight with

In a time when identity lines are blurring with confusion, it may be wise to clear up some of the
definitions cluttering up those lines. Pigeonholing talents, interests, and abilities has brought
great divisions and harm throughout history. Ideas of masculine and feminine rolls have
cramped, criticized, and broken hearts and spirits. Maybe it's not the genders that are confused,
but the order in which each individual is permitted to meet, embrace, and identify with them.
